What is Aquamation?

Also called alkaline hydrolysis or aqua cremation, aquamation uses a combination of water flow, temperature, and alkalinity to accelerate the natural breakdown of the human body.

Many highly regarded institutions – the Mayo Clinic and UCLA Medical School – have utilized aquamation for over twenty-five years.

Aquamation adds no direct emissions of harmful greenhouse gases or mercury into the atmosphere, only water. The process is very energy-efficient, offering over 90% energy savings compared to traditional cremation, with only 1/10th the carbon footprint.

To offset the remaining carbon footprint of each aquamation, Cremstar makes a donation to the National Forest Service in the name of the deceased, underwriting the planting of a tree in their honor.

With a smaller ecological cost than cremation, green burial, or human composting, aquamation is the perfect end-of-life solution for those who care about leaving a green legacy.

The Cremstar Aquamation Package

Each Cremstar aquamation includes the following key items. Make sure when you're shopping around that competitor quotes include each of these required components:

  • Pickup and transport;

  • Social Security notification and filing of forms;

  • Crematory fee;

  • Basic container for the cremains (ashes);

  • Shipping of cremains;

  • Carbon offset through tree planting;

  • Online MemoryBox memorial.

All cremains derived from aquamations are shipped back to families in a 8 3/4 L x 8 3/4 W x 5 3/4 H container. Water cremations generate up to 30% more cremains than traditional cremations.

There are currently no aquamation facilities in either New Jersey or Pennsylvania. Cremstar transports decedents to the nearest aquamation facility available, in either Connecticut, Maryland, or North Carolina.
